Our story
A journey through memory
How a family's ruined hacienda on Tenerife's old royal road became four houses to share.
The dream
“We used to visit the houses of the Camino Real.”
We loved to imagine what life was like here centuries ago. Walking around the houses, as I had done so many times as a boy, I felt, inexplicably, the strength of my family, who for several generations had owned part of that great house.
The summer afternoons on the Camino Real with the farm's sharecropper, his children and my brother were long behind me; now it was my wife who came with me to remember my childhood.
At first our visits were occasional but, without our noticing, they became more and more frequent. The pull of the old farmstead wrapped itself around us: its gateway, its patio, its many rooms. It became part of our lives.
We wanted it preserved, yet on every visit we could see it crumbling a little more. The story of houses that had become a symbol of the village's identity could not end like that.
So one day, despite differing opinions and after a great deal of thought, we decided to restore the farmstead and make it habitable again. We will not dwell on the problems we met, nor on the time it took. We only want to thank everyone who made our dream come true.

The estate
One of the finest rural haciendas in the south of Tenerife
The group of historic buildings known locally as the Caserío del Camino Real was built in the seventeenth century by the Delgado Mejías family. Behind a lintelled gateway crowned with three merlons stand the manor house, wine cellars, stables and storehouses, all built of carved tuff stone and fine timber.
Its construction follows the domestic architecture of the Canary Islands, and almost all of its original structures had survived. That is why it was already listed in Fasnia's municipal catalogue of historic heritage.
The houses take their name from the old cobbled royal road, the Camino Real, that once connected Fasnia with the other towns of the island.
The restoration
Two and a half years, by hand
Work began with clearing the site in the first months of 2010 and ended almost two and a half years later.
- 2010
A new beginning
Clearing begins on a comprehensive rehabilitation of the whole group of historic buildings.
- 2010
The architect, Pepe Sánchez
His meticulous restoration focused on conserving the historic buildings and their rural setting, using the traditional techniques and materials of the time and place: tea pine, clay roof tiles, chasnera stone slabs and lime to render the stone and mud walls.
- 2013
The restoration completed
Every element that had withstood time was kept. Modern materials were used only where nothing had existed before, chiefly the kitchens and bathrooms, to give the houses today's comforts.
- 2017
Best Rural Accommodation
Premio Gánigo for the best rural accommodation, awarded by the Centro de Iniciativas y Turismo Comarcas del Sur de Tenerife (CIT Sur).
- 2nd ed.
Premio Paisaje de Tenerife
The quality of the rehabilitation was recognised with the Tenerife Landscape Award, 2nd edition, granted by the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife.
